Switchboard maintains highly reputable emailing domains to ensure that emails are delivered. However, email delivery can sometimes fail due to the various systems in between Switchboard and students that are designed to prevent email abuse. In order to maintain high deliverability, Switchboard uses AWS Simple Email Service (SES) to manage both our outbound & inbound mail, and we use a set of shared IPs that AWS manages, which already have a high level of trust built up among the major email providers.

This allows Switchboard to send messages without much issue, but whitelisting by domain adds an extra layer of dependability that ensures emails make it to the community with no issues.
